Mauritania is a blend of Africans and those with Arab Berber descent. In Africa some of the best scenery can be found here in Mauritania including the World Heritage-listed caravan town or the beautiful golden desert meandering alongside the Atlantic ocean. Amongst some of the interesting things to do here, one can visit the wonderful Parc national du Banc Banc d’Arguin. Here one can see some of the thousands of birds that migrate every year between Africa and Europe. If you are a foody, you probably will not be excited by the food here as it usually consists of rice, meat or fish. Vegetables are expensive and usually only imported. The nearest thing to entertainment in Mauritania is a wedding and not much else. If you like peace and quiet and going to bed early, you will likely enjoy your trip here.
Sixty years ago the capital city of Nouakch started as a small fishing village to what is now the largest city in the country. When walking around it seems rather like an unplanned city where large gated homes are situated anywhere on the sand for no reason. Most visitors to this city use it as a stopover en-route to somewhere else. It does have a small selection of comfy hotels and could be a place to relax for a day or two.
